UPDATE: 19-year-old man killed in NW Side crash

UPDATES WITH ID

A 19-year-old man was killed when he lost control of an SUV and it slammed into a Montclare neighborhood building early Saturday on the Northwest Side.

The crash happened about 1:15 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Narragansett, according to Chicago Police.

Erick Alvarado was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the neighborhood.

CPD’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit is reviewing the case.


65-year-old man reported missing after leaving Englewood home

A 65-year-old man who hasn’t been seen since last month has been reported missing from the South Side Englewood neighborhood.

Milton Barber was last seen July 20, when he left his home in the 5500 block of South May, according to a missing person alert from Chicago Police.

He was described as a 5-foot-7, 175-pound black man with brown eyes, a bald head and a dark brown complexion.

Barber was wearing a gold T-shirt, black denim pants and brown Timberland boots, police said. He has a tattoo that reads “Renee” on his lower leg.

He also has scars on his chest and buttocks, authorities said. He spends time on the West and South Sides.

A man was gravely wounded in a shooting Saturday morning in the Brighton Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

The 31-year-old was shot in the neck at 5:44 a.m. in the 2500 block of West 50th Street, according to Chicago Police.

He took himself to Holy Cross Hospital and was later transferred to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in “grave” condition, police said.

At least nine people have been wounded in separate shootings across Chicago from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.

There have been at least 2,201 people shot in the city so far this year, 380 of them fatally, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The weekend’s latest shooting happened about 5:44 a.m. Saturday in the Southwest Side Gage Park neighborhood, where a 31-year-old man was shot in the neck in the 2500 block of West 50th Street, according to Chicago Police. He took himself to Holy Cross Hospital and was later transferred to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in “grave” condition.

Another man was shot more than four hours earlier in the Albany Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. The 29-year-old was sitting inside a vehicle at 1:22 a.m. in an alley off the 4400 block of North Whipple when another car pulled up and someone got out to shoot him in the chest, police said. He drove himself to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was in serious condition.

About 11:20 p.m. Friday, a 37-year-old man was on a Lawndale neighborhood sidewalk in the 1600 block of South Drake when someone shot him in the leg. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and his condition was stabilized, police said.

Just over an hour earlier, shooters opened fire at 10:15 p.m. on a 36-year-old man sitting in a vehicle parked in Gresham’s 7500 block of South Union, police said. He was shot in the shoulder and taken in serious condition to Christ Medical Center in serious condition.

About 8:20 p.m. in Brighton Park, bullets grazed the chest of a 20-year-old man and the neck of a 25-year-old woman in the 2900 block of West 40th Street. They declined treatment, police said.

Just before 8 p.m., a 29-year-old man was sitting in front of an Austin neighborhood home in the 1100 block of North Lockwood when someone walked up and shot him in the back, police said. He was stabilized at Stroger Hospital.

About 4:40 p.m., a fight started between two people inside a South Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood business in the 2700 block of West 63rd Street, and it ended outside the business when one of them shot the other, police said. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was taken to Christ Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the side and his condition was stabilized. The male shooter was taken into custody.

The weekend’s first shooting happened about 4:20 p.m. in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. A 21-year-old man was walking past a group in the 900 block of North Central Park when one of them grabbed cash from his pocket, police said. When the man ran, someone in the group shot him in the arm. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.

Man charged with aggravated battery in Naperville

(NAPERVILLE) A west suburban man was charged with battering a woman in her car late Sunday night in Naperville.

Early Monday morning, the 30-year-old woman reported being battered while sitting in her vehicle about 11:55 p.m. Sunday in an alley in the first block of West Van Buren Avenue, according to a statement from Naperville police.

She told investigators she was punched in the face and head multiple times by a man she’d met earlier in the evening, police said. She suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Investigators identified the suspect as 28-year-old Nicarro Drake of Lisle, who was charged with one felony count of aggravated battery, police said.

Drake is being held at the DuPage County Jail on a $5,000 bond and was expected to appear in court again on Saturday, according to the DuPage County sheriff’s office.

Police: Person fatally struck by freight train in West Beverly

A person was fatally struck by a freight train Sunday morning in the West Beverly neighborhood on the Far South Side, police said.

The male, whose age was not known, was struck by the train at 3:43 a.m. near West 102nd Street and South Maplewood Avenue, according to Chicago Police.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on the fatality.

Police said the incident appears to be a suicide.

UPDATE: Fire officials: Person falls onto Red Line tracks in the Loop

A person fell on the CTA tracks Sunday morning at a Red Line station in the Loop, fire officials said.

The CTA cut the power to Red Line trains shortly before 6 a.m. after a report of a person on the tracks at the Chicago station, 800 N. State St., according to Chicago Fire Department Cmdr. Walter Schroeder.

Paramedics responded to the scene, but additional details were not immediately available, Schroeder said.

As of 6:36 a.m., Red Line trains were running normally after being temporarily rerouted to the elevated tracks between the Fullerton and Cermak stations, according to the CTA.


Police: Man killed in domestic-related shooting in Clearing

A 33-year-old man was killed Sunday morning in a domestic-related shooting in the Clearing neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said.

At 5:18 a.m., a 30-year-old woman was being battered by the man in the 6900 block of West 65th Street when she pulled out a gun and shot him three times, according to Chicago Police.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on the fatality.

Police said the incident was believed to be domestic-related. The woman was in custody and charges were pending Sunday morning.

A teenage boy was killed in a Pilsen neighborhood drive-by shooting early Sunday on the South Side.

About 2:35 a.m., 14-year-old Damien Santoyo was standing with two other juveniles on a porch in the 1700 block of South Newberry Avenue when people in a passing vehicle yelled gang slogans and fired shots, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Santoyo was shot in the head and pronounced dead at the scene at 2:50 a.m., authorities said. He lived in the Ashburn neighborhood on the Southwest Side.

A man died Sunday morning after he fell onto the Red Line tracks in the Loop, fire officials said.

The CTA cut the power to Red Line trains shortly before 6 a.m. after a report of a person on the southbound tracks near the former Washington station at 128 N. State St., according to CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase. The station closed in 2006.

A 14-year-old boy was among three people killed and 22 others wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday afternoon and Sunday morning.

The most recent deaths were the latest of 383 people fatally shot in the city this year, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times. In all, more than 2,200 people have been shot since the start of 2017.

Most recently, a 33-year-old man was killed at 5:18 a.m. Sunday in a domestic-related shooting in the Clearing neighborhood on the Southwest Side. A 30-year-old woman was being battered by the man in the 6900 block of West 65th Street when she pulled out a gun and shot him three times, according to Chicago Police. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Police said the incident was believed to be domestic-related. The woman was in custody and charges were pending Sunday morning.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office did not immediately provide information on that fatality.

About 10:40 p.m. Saturday, a 39-year-old man was gunned down in the Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. He was driving west in the 300 block of West 57th Street when someone fired shots, striking him multiple times in the torso, police said. The man’s vehicle then struck a fence. Officers eventually found the man in the vehicle and he was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced. His name has not been released.

The weekend’s latest nonfatal shooting happened about 5 a.m. Sunday in the Pilsen neighborhood on the South Side. A 19-year-old was standing on the sidewalk in the 800 block of West 19th Street when someone in a passing red vehicle fired shots in his direction, police said. He suffered a gunshot wound to the abdomen and was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital.

At least 21 other people have been wounded in shootings across Chicago since 4 p.m. Friday.

Last weekend, six men were killed and at least 35 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday night and Monday morning.

3 men charged with shoplifting at Naperville store

(NAPERVILLE) Three 18-year-old men were charged with shoplifting Friday afternoon at a store in west suburban Naperville.

Officers responded at 3:27 p.m. to a report of a retail theft at a store in the 100 block of West Jefferson Avenue, according to Naperville police. When officers arrived, three suspects ran away from store employees. They were later taken into custody following a brief search.

Kyiontae A. Evans, Tresean L. Jordan and Blessin C. Rhodes were each charged with a single count of retail theft, police said.

Their home addresses, bond information and upcoming court dates were not immediately known.

UPDATES WITH RESENT ALERT

Police are asking for the public’s help finding the driver who struck a pedestrian and left him for dead more than a week ago in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side

The hit-and-run crash happened about 3:30 a.m. July 28 in the 3500 block of West Congress, according to Chicago Police.

Willie Lamont Hopkins, 42, was struck by a car and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he died at 3:48 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the South Side New City neighborhood.

An autopsy conducted Saturday found Hopkins died from multiple injuries related to the crash, and his death was ruled an accident, according to the medical examiner’s office.

Detectives resent a community alert Sunday morning seeking tips from the public about the driver and the car that struck the victim. The car is described as a dark gray BMW sedan with damage to the left side and front end, and was last seen heading west on Congress from St. Louis.

UPDATES WITH SATURDAY’S ARRESTS/TRANSPORTS

Sixteen people have been arrested in the first three days of the Lollapalooza music festival this weekend in downtown Chicago.

Four people were arrested Saturday, the third day of the festival, according to Melissa Stratton, a spokeswoman for the city’s Office of Emergency Management and Communications. Ten people were arrested Friday, and two people were arrested Thursday, the opening day of the festival.

The arrests were for theft, battery, trespassing and narcotics, Stratton said. Another 26 people were issued citations — nearly all for fence jumping and trespassing — during the festival’s first three days.

Additionally, 185 people have been transported to hospitals for treatment by paramedics, Stratton said. Fifty-seven people were transported Saturday, 56 were transported on Friday and 72 people were transported Thursday.

At least one person was in custody Saturday after police recovered 60 cellphones that were stolen from Lollapalooza concertgoers, Chicago Police announced on Twitter.

No one injured when person crashes SUV during Calumet Heights shootout

No injuries were reported after a person crashed an SUV during a shootout early Monday in the Calumet Heights neighborhood on the South Side.

At 1:23 a.m., a 39-year-old man was driving a white 2015 Dodge Charger southbound in the 9500 block of Stony Island Avenue when another male driving a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox fired shots in his direction, according to Chicago Police.

The 39-year-old, who has a valid concealed carry permit, then returned fire at the shooter, who crashed his car before running away from the scene, police said. The Dodge sustained damage from the gunfire, but the driver was not injured.

No one was in custody, police said.

Man, 23, shot in Washington Park

A man was shot early Monday in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood.

The 23-year-old was standing on the sidewalk at 3:58 a.m. in the 5200 block of South King Drive when someone in a white sedan fired shots, striking him in his chest and legs, according to Chicago Police.

He was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center, where his condition was stabilized, police said. He was expected to be transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital.
