Cops: Man had BAC of .316 after I-88 crash, attempted escape from hospital

Driving with a blood alcohol level nearly four times the legal limit on I-88 Sunday night wasn’t even the worst of it for a south suburban man, according to prosecutors.

They allege 31-year-old Steven A. Johnson. Jr. of Midlothian, who had a BAC of .316 when he was finally tested, was already out on bond from a previous DUI arrest.

Then he was involved in a crash on I-88, and tried to run away when he was taken to a hospital, according to the Kane County state’s attorney’s office. To top it all off, he was out on bond from a previous DUI case, and was driving without insurance on a suspended driver’s license.

It all adds up to charges of aggravated DUI, resisting a police officer, driving while suspended, and operating an uninsured vehicle, plus a ticket for improper lane use, a traffic offense.

About 10:30 p.m. Sunday, Johnson was driving drunk  when he was involved in a crash on westbound I-88 just west of Route 47, about 3 miles west of Aurora, prosecutors said.

He was taken to a hospital, “where he unsuccessfully attempted to flee from custody,” prosecutors said.

Johnson was wanted on a Cook County warrant and was driving on a license suspended for a previous DUI, prosecutors said. He was free on bond for another pending DUI case in Kane County.

A judge set bond at $25,000, and Johnson’s next court appearance will be Wednesday in St. Charles. He remains in custody at the Kane County jail.

Men convicted of 1994 rape/murder claim DNA evidence exonerates them

Two men who have spent the last 23 years in prison are serving time for a rape and murder they could not possibly have committed, according to a new filing by attorneys for the Exoneration Project.

Nevest Coleman and Darryl Fulton were convicted in 1997 of the April 1994 murder and aggravated sexual assault of Antwinica Bridgeman in the South Side Englewood neighborhood, according to court and IDOC records.

The victim had been out celebrating her 20th birthday when she disappeared, and was found weeks later in Coleman’s basement.

Coleman and Fulton were convicted “despite no physical evidence linking them to the crime,” a statement from their attorneys, Russell Ainsworth of The Exoneration Project, and  Kathleen Zellner, said.

Coleman, who had worked as a groundskeeper at Comiskey Park for 25 years, had a 2-year-old daughter and 3-month-old son, and “had never been arrested before in his life. He lost both parents while he was in prison,” his attorneys said.

Now 48, he is incarcerated at Hill Correctional Center, while Fulton, now 51, is an inmate at the Menard Correctional Center, according to IDOC records.

In a filing in Cook County Circuit Court on Monday, the attorneys claims “new DNA evidence points to another suspect,” a serial rapist who is not named.

“Recent DNA testing has matched semen on the victim’s underwear and sweatshirt, as well as DNA from underneath the victim’s fingernails, to that of a serial rapist, whose identity is currently undisclosed, and completely excluded Coleman and Fulton,” the statement read.

“Despite the new evidence and an ample history of misconduct by the detectives who conducted the original investigation, Cook County States Attorney Kim Foxx is opposing the release of Coleman and Fulton,” the attorneys said.

However, the state’s attorney’s office released a statement saying the case remains under review.

“Mr. Coleman’s case remains the subject of an intense review and investigation by the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office Conviction Integrity Unit,” the statement read.

“As stated in court today, we believe it is inappropriate to release Mr. Coleman until we have additional information about what role Mr. Coleman played in the rape and murder for which he was convicted. We are awaiting additional DNA results and have asked for an expedited examination from the laboratory. We will continue to approach the investigation of Mr. Coleman’s conviction with urgency, and remain in contact with Mr. Coleman’s counsel as the investigation proceeds.”

Attorneys think it is unfair for their client to wait in prison.

“The sole evidence against the defendants at the time of the trial was Coleman’s coerced confession, obtained by notorious Area 2 detectives. All of the forensic evidence then available excluded Mr. Coleman and the two men implicated by his confession,” the statement said.

Those detectives “have been the subject of investigation after numerous convictions have unraveled due to a pattern of false confessions in their cases,” the attorneys claim.

Bill Foley, lead detective on Coleman’s case, who obtained the confession, “has been revealed as the detective who obtained a false confession from Harold Richardson in the now-notorious ‘Englewood Four,'” attorneys claim.

Other detectives on the case “trained under the infamous Jon Burge, and have been accused by dozens of men of coercing false confessions, including many Burge-era exonerees,” they said.

UPDATES WITH DETAILS

Vehicular and train traffic is slowed on the Far South Side after a police pursuit of a carjacking suspect led to a police-involved shooting and ongoing manhunt along the Bishop Ford Freeway.

It began about 2:19 p.m. when Dolton police tried to stop a vehicle being sought in connection with a carjacking in Hazel Crest, according to Illinois State Police. The suspects abandoned the vehicle and ran off near 130th Street, and police began a foot pursuit.

One of the suspects was shot by police and taken to an area hospital, according to ISP.

The other is still at large, and a large police contingent, including ISP, Dolton and Chicago officers are searching the area along the freeway on foot.

Chicago Police said they are assisting the Dolton police with the investigation in the 1300 block of East 130th Street, but would offer no further details. Dolton police could not immediately provide information.

All traffic on the inbound Ford was being stopped at 130th Street as of about 3 p.m., though some traffic was being allowed past on the shoulder at of about 4 p.m. Southbound lanes are not affected.

The South Shore Line’s eastbound 209 train is stopped at Millennium Station because of the police activity near the Hegewisch station. Train 109 has also been stopped just west of the Hegewisch station; and westbound train 118 is stopped at East Chicago. No timetable has been given for resumption of service.

A man died Monday afternoon, one year after he was wounded in a domestic shooting in the Northwest Side Logan Square neighborhood.

Samantha Santiago, 29, was charged July 25 with one count of attempted first-degree murder in connection with the shooting of 36-year-old Lavatus McCullough, according to Chicago Police and Cook County court records.

McCullough was shot in the neck about 1:30 a.m. on July 31, 2016 in the 2000 block of North Kedzie, authorities said.

McCullough, who lived on the Near North Side, died at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn at 1:58 p.m. Monday, according to the medical examiner’s office. An autopsy Tuesday found he died of complications of a remote gunshot wound to the neck, and his death was ruled a homicide.

Police said the shooting happened during a domestic dispute.

Santiago, who lived on the same block as the shooting, remains held at the Cook County Jail on a $950,000 bond, according to Cook County sheriff’s records. She is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 21.

Chicago cop on trial for tipping off drug supplier to federal raid

After hunting the Conservative Vice Lords street gang for more than a year, authorities finally had the prolific drug dealers in their sights back in June 2014.

But then, poised to execute more than 30 arrest and search warrants, federal agents and Chicago Police officers suddenly heard nine devastating words on the wiretapped phone call of a major drug supplier: “We gotta homie that works for the task force.”

And that “homie” had a warning: “They gonna hit 10-12 houses over there. And it’s coming soon.”

Assistant U.S. Attorney Shoba Pillay told a jury Tuesday “those words were shocking to those officers and agents,”the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

She said the tip came from Chicago Police Officer Ronald T. Coleman, who allegedly breached “a circle of trust” and is now on trial for obstruction of justice in the courtroom of U.S. District Judge Charles Norgle.

Coleman’s lawyers say the feds only have two untrustworthy witnesses to tie Coleman to the tip.

“Ronald Coleman’s only interest was doing his job as a police officer,” Matt McQuaid, one of Coleman’s attorneys, told the jury during opening statements Tuesday.

McQuaid said Coleman, 46, grew up and played basketball on the West Side—right where he wound up working with the Drug Enforcement Administration on an investigation of the Conservative Vice Lords known as Operation Five Leaf Clover.

When it appeared that a man he had played basketball with in high school would be caught up in the investigation, Coleman allegedly warned the man’s cousin, who Coleman also knew from high school.

Coleman had allegedly spotted the man with Rodney Bedenfield, the Conservative Vice Lords’ primary heroin supplier. Over the course of a year, Bedenfield had provided the gang with tens of thousands of user quantities of heroin, records show.

Through a chain of phone calls, word of Coleman’s alleged warning trickled back to Bedenfield. On a recorded phone call, an associate told him: “He say whatever ya’ll got going on, he say stop it and he’s like and just clean up. He say cause they got us coming.”

The tip didn’t do Bedenfield much good.

Authorities caught him lugging three bags in his car from a home in the 2100 block of South Spaulding to a home one block over in the 2100 block of South Christiana. So they searched that house too. And Pillay said they found what amounts to a “drug trafficker’s starter kit,” including at least five handguns, a rifle, 400 grams of heroin and several pieces of drug paraphernalia.

Some of Bedenfield’s guns had laser sights, prosecutors have said. A duffle bag full of $83,000 cash was also found in his home, even though Bedenfield “has no legitimate employment history.” In the end, Bedenfield wound up with an 18-year prison sentence, records show.
