Man shot in Humboldt Park

A man was shot early Thursday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side.

The 36-year-old was sitting in his black, four-door Volkswagen about 5:15 a.m. in the 3900 block of West Grand when another vehicle pulled up alongside and someone inside fired at least five shots, according to Chicago Police.

The man suffered gunshot wounds to the left arm and lower back and was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized, police said. He could not provide investigators with a description of the shooter or the vehicle.

Man’s body found in burning vehicle in Palos Hills

(PALOS HILLS) A man’s body was found in a burning vehicle Monday morning in southwest suburban Palos Hills.

About 7 a.m., the white four-door vehicle was found smoldering in the 10700 block of Michael Drive, according to Palos Hills police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

A body was found in the driver’s seat of the vehicle, police said.

He was identified by dental records as 66-year-old Frank Siwiec of Orland Park, authorities said. An autopsy Tuesday did not rule on his cause and manner of death pending further investigation.

Police are still investigating the cause of the fire.

A 75-year-old man drowned in the pool of XSport Fitness on Sunday morning in the Avondale neighborhood on the Northwest Side.

David P. Justin was swimming at the gym’s pool in the 2300 block of West Logan Boulevard when he suffered cardiac arrest, according to Chicago Police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Justin was taken to Saints Mary and Eizabeth Medical Center, where he died at 7:04 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived in the North Center neighborhood.

An autopsy performed Monday found Justin drowned, with hypertensive and arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease as a contributing factor, according to the medical examiner’s office. His death was ruled an accident.

Police said there were no signs of foul play.

Kayaker rescued from Fox River, which was still closed due to flooding

(WEST DUNDEE) A kayaker was rescued Wednesday afternoon from the Fox River, which remained closed due to flooding, in the northwest suburbs.

The West Dundee Fire Department responded at 3:17 p.m. to a kayaker in distress near the foot bridge in South End Park.

The 24-year-old man’s kayak was stuck against a tree that had been wedged under the bridge, according to the fire department. He had lost his paddle and was unable to free himself from the tree and rapid current.

Crews pulled the victim and his kayak to the shore, and the man was informed that the river is still at flood stage and closed to recreational watercraft.

String of armed robberies reported on South, Southwest sides

Police are warning residents about a string of armed robberies this week on the South and Southwest sides.

In each incident, the robbers walked up to victims and demanded property, according to an alert from Chicago Police.

The robberies happened:

• at 5:31 a.m. Tuesday in the 5800 block of South Trumbull Avenue;

• about 5:45 a.m. Tuesday in the 5700 block of South Rockwell Street;

• about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday in the 2600 block of West 44th Street;

• between 4 p.m. and 4:15 p.m. Wednesday in the 4300 block of South Francisco Avenue; and

• between 7:40 p.m. and 7:55 p.m. Wednesday in the 4900 block of South Hermitage Avenue.

The suspects include men and women in their teens and 20s, police said. In one incident, they were seen driving what was believed to be a red or maroon Dodge Caravan or Nissan Rogue. In another incident, the robbers were seen in a Chrysler Town & Country.

UPDATE: Woman charged with DUI for McCook crash that left passenger dead

A woman has been charged with DUI for a crash that left her passenger dead in west suburban McCook about six weeks ago.

Tracey Fellows, 35, was charged Wednesday with one count of aggravated DUI in a crash causing death, according to McCook Police Chief Mario DePasquale.

At 10:21 p.m. June 16, Fellows was driving west in the 8100 block of 47th Street when she lost control of her vehicle and it crossed into oncoming traffic, striking an eastbound vehicle, DePasquale said.

Fellows’s passenger, 37-year-old Joseph Roe of Brookfield, was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he died six days later, at 7:45 p.m. June 22, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of multiple injuries from the crash, and his death was ruled an accident.

Fellows was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, DePasquale said.

The driver of the other vehicle, a 40-year-old Riverside woman, and her three juvenile passengers suffered only minor injuries.

Fellows, a Brookfield resident, was released from jail Thursday on a $50,000 bond, on the condition that she use a breathalyzer engine lock device when driving. 


Police: Man electrocuted on West Town L tracks

A man in his 20s was electrocuted early Friday when he climbed down onto the L tracks at the Ashland/Lake CTA station in West Town, police said.

Just before 2 a.m., he touched the third rail and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Chicago Police.

Pink and Green line trains were briefly suspended as authorities investigated. Trains were back on the move with moderate delays by about 4:30 a.m., according to the CTA.

Area Central detectives were handling the death investigation.

High-end bikes among items stolen from North, Near North Side garages

Police are looking for burglars suspected to have stolen property in the last two months from more than a dozen garages on the North and Near North Sides.

In all the incidents, owners left their garage doors open or unlocked when people came in and stole items, including high-end bicycles, according to an alert from Chicago Police.

The burglaries happened:

  • in the morning hours on June 8 in the 1000 block of West Webster Avenue;
  • in the after noon hours on June 9 in the 1000 block of North Larrabee Street;
  • in the late evening hours to early morning hours on June 16-17 in the 2000 block of North Racine Avenue;
  • in the afternoon hours on June 16 in the 2300 block of North Bosworth Avenue;
  • in the morning hours on June 18 in the 2200 block of North Racine Avenue;
  • in the morning hours on June 19 in the 2000 block of North Halsted Street;
  • in the evening hours on June 21-23 in the 1900 block of North Lincoln Avenue;
  • in the evening hours on June 22-23 in the 1700 block of North Fremont Street;
  • in the evening hours on June 28-30 in the 1300 block of North Cleveland Avenue;
  • in the evening hours on July 8-9 in the 2200 block of North Greenview Avenue;
  • in the evening hours on July 18 in the 1600 block of North Bissell Street;
  • in the morning hours on July 20 in the 2200 block of North Greenview Avenue;

UPDATE: Man charged with killing 16-year-old girl, woman in Crystal Lake

UPDATES WITH CHARGES

(CRYSTAL LAKE) A northwest suburban man has been charged with fatally shooting a 16-year-old girl and a 31-year-old woman inside a Crystal Lake home Thursday night.

Ryan C. Yarber, 31, faces four counts of first-degree murder, according to Crystal Lake police.

About 8 p.m., officers were called to a home in the 100 block of Marian Parkway for a report of a female armed with a knife, according to a statement from Crystal Lake police. Before they got there, police got another call saying a gunman was in the house.

When they arrived, the officers found the teen and woman with multiple gunshot wounds inside the home. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

Yarber was arrested soon after, and a gun was recovered at the home, according to police, who have not identified the victims or specified their relationships to Yarber.

Police called the shooting isolated and said there was no threat to public safety. Despite the arrest, they said the investigation was “ongoing and active” Friday morning as Yarber was held at the McHenry County Jail.

Southwest suburban man hits $550K Lucky Day Lotto jackpot

(NEW LENOX) A southwest suburban man is $550,000 richer after he hit the jackpot Friday in the Lucky Day Lotto.

Patrick Kennedy bought the winning ticket at Jewel-Osco, 2021 E. Laraway, in New Lenox, and matched all five numbers in the midday drawing, according to the Illinois Lottery.

Kennedy said he’s going to share the money with his family, lottery officials said.

The Jewel received a bonus of $5,500, or one percent of the prize amount, for selling the winning ticket.

UPDATE: Motorcyclist killed in Cicero crash

(CICERO) A motorcyclist was killed in a crash early Saturday in west suburban Cicero.

Osvaldo A. Garcia, 30, was riding south in the 2400 block of South Cicero Avenue about 1 a.m. when he lost control of the bike and struck a pole, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office and Ray Hanania, spokesman for the town of Cicero.

Garcia, a Pilsen neighborhood resident, was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m., according to the medical examiner’s office.

An autopsy Saturday found he died of multiple injuries from the crash, and his death was ruled an accident.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, Hanania said.


UPDATE: Woman dies 11 days after being hit by vehicle in Joliet

(JOLIET) A woman who was struck by a vehicle last month in southwest suburban Joliet died Tuesday morning.

The vehicle was northbound on Larkin Avenue, approaching a green light at the intersection with Theodore Street, when it hit 41-year-old Joy Fry about 8:35 p.m. July 21, according to Joliet police.

Fry and a 50-year-old man were walking eastbound across Larkin at the time of the crash, police said. The man told investigators they saw that the light was green for northbound traffic, but thought traffic was clear enough to run across. He was about 10 feet in front of Fry when she was hit.

The driver of the vehicle pulled over and remained at the scene, police said. He gave detectives a statement through a translator, stating he saw the man run across the street but did not see Fry. He felt his vehicle hit something and pulled over. A witness told investigators the man was driving at or under the posted 40 mph speed limit at the time.

Fry was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with a fractured jaw, fractured tibia, fractured pelvis and brain bleed, police said.

Fry, who lived in Joliet, was pronounced dead at the hospital at 3:20 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found she died from multiple blunt force injuries suffered in the crash, and her death was ruled an accident.

The driver was not cited, police said.

Police warn Northwest Side residents about string of garage burglaries

Police are warning Northwest Side residents about a string of recent garage burglaries.

In each incident, the burglar or burglars broke into a garage through a side door and stole property, according to an alert from Chicago Police.

The burglaries happened:

• at 7:53 p.m. July 15 in the 4800 block of West Diversey;

• between 9:30 a.m. and 10:10 a.m. July 26 in the 5000 block of West Fletcher; and

• between 8:30 a.m. and 11 a.m. July 31 in the 2900 block of North Kilpatrick.

In one instance, a witness saw two males running from their garage carrying bags, police said. The suspects were thought to be Hispanic.

Man shot in chest in Albany Park

A man was seriously hurt early Saturday in a Northwest Side shooting in the Albany Park neighborhood.

The 29-year-old was sitting in a vehicle at 1:22 a.m. in an alley in the 4400 block of North Whipple when another vehicle drove up and someone got out and fired at him, according to Chicago Police. He was shot in the chest.

He drove himself to Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was listed in serious condition, police said.

Police: 19-year-old man killed in NW Side crash

A 19-year-old man was killed when he lost control of an SUV and it slammed into a Montclare neighborhood building early Saturday on the Northwest Side, according to Chicago Police.

The crash happened about 1:15 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Narragansett, and the man died at the scene, police said.

CPD’s Major Accidents Investigation Unit is reviewing the case.
