UPDATES WITH FATALITY CONFIRMED

A man critically injured in a house fire Wednesday morning in the Clearing neighborhood on the Southwest Side has died at a suburban hospital.

Firefighters responded about 8:50 a.m. to a fire in a single-story home in the 5700 block of West 63rd Place, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford. Firefighters were initially told several people were trapped inside the house, prompting them to upgrade the alarm to a still and box.

A man, thought to be in his 50s, was found inside the home and was taken in “extremely critical” condition to MacNeal Hospital in Berwyn, Langford said.

That man was later pronounced dead, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

No other injuries were reported.

The blaze, which originated in the front of the home, was extinguished within 15 minutes, Langford said. The cause remains under investigation.
