(EVANSTON) Two Chicago men are facing multiple charges after a traffic stop Tuesday night in north suburban Evanston uncovered a loaded handgun and marijuana.

Detectives conducted a traffic stop at 7:38 p.m. in the 1200 block of Howard Street after noticing that the passenger in the front seat of a vehicle wasn’t wearing his seat belt, according to Evanston police. When they walked up to the vehicle, detectives smelled marijuana and ordered the four occupants to get out.

When the man sitting in the rear passenger side seat got out of the vehicle, detectives noticed a handgun sticking out of the lower door storage pocket, police said. The four men, who are all from Chicago, were then taken into custody, and a loaded Sig Sauer .22 caliber handgun with the serial number removed was recovered.

After further checking the vehicle, 13 grams of marijuana were recovered from the storage compartment under the front passenger seat, police said. A search of the rear driver’s side also uncovered a prescription pad with loose prescriptions, some of which were filled out to acquire codeine.

The men were then taken to the Evanston police department, police said.

The man who was seated in the rear passenger side seat, 25-year-old Eric L. Wilson, was charged with a felony count of unlawful use of a handgun by a convicted felon on parole, and two misdemeanor counts of possession of firearm/ammunition without FOID card, police said. After alerting the Illinois Department of Corrections, a warrant for Wilson’s arrest was issued due to his parole status.

Cameron Bush, 18, who was seated in the front passenger’s side seat, was charged with a misdemeanor count of unlawful possession of cannabis, police said. He was also cited for failure to wear seat belt.

Both men live in the Chatham neighborhood, police said.

A 26-year-old man who was sitting in the rear driver’s side seat was still in custody Wednesday afternoon due to charges related to the recovered prescriptions, police said. The investigation was ongoing.

The vehicle’s 26-year-old driver was released without being charged, police said.

Coordinated arrests in Joliet lead to recovery of guns, cocaine

(JOLIET) A joint law enforcement operation conducted Tuesday morning in southwest suburban Joliet resulted in arrest warrants for 16 people, as well as the seizure of 31 illegal guns and more than 200 grams of cocaine.

Over 100 law enforcement agents arrested the offenders on a range of felony charges, including drug dealing and illegal sale of firearms, according to the Will County state’s attorney’s office.

Several people were charged with possession of stolen firearms or gun running, and five were charged with with being “armed habitual criminals” based on their records, the state’s attorney’s office said. Most of the people targeted in the operation were suspected gang members.

The coordinated effort was carried out by the state’s attorney’s office, Joliet police, the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad and federal agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

“Multi-jurisdictional sweeps like the one conducted today greatly expand the ability of law enforcement to defuse gang activity while taking illegal weapons and narcotics off our streets,” Will County State’s Attorney James Glasgow said in a statement. “We work closely with our local police agencies on a daily basis to keep our neighborhoods safe.”

“But the participation of federal agencies like ATF puts significant additional resources and manpower into the mix and lets drug dealers and gun traffickers know without question that we mean business,” Glasgow added.

(WHEATFIELD, Ind.) The parents of a 2 month-old northwest Indiana boy whose death in March was ruled a homicide by child abuse are now facing additional charges.

Dannae Zylstra, 19, and her 27-year-old husband Michael Zylstra were charged with felony counts of neglect of a dependent following the March 8 death of their baby Ayden Zylstra at their Wheatfield home, according to the Jasper County sheriff’s office. Wheatfield is about 45 miles southwest of Gary.

Emergency crews were first called about 2 a.m. to the home, where Ayden was unresponsive and showing signs of respiratory distress, sheriff’s police said.

Paramedics performed CPR on the infant as he was taken to a hospital in Valparaiso. State child welfare investigators were notified by doctors that Ayden’s respiratory problems had been caused by a “traumatic injury,” police said.

Later in the day, police executed a search warrant at the family’s home, finding an unspecified amount of cocaine, methamphetamine, a mixture of heroin and fentanyl and drug paraphernalia, police said. Dannae and Michael Zylstra were arrested in a traffic stop in Wheatfield the next day.

Ayden was later transferred to the University of Chicago’s Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9:12 p.m. Sunday, according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. An autopsy found he died of multiple injuries due to child abuse and ruled his death a homicide.

In addition to the original charges, Ayden’s parents were also charged with felony counts of maintaining a common nuisance and possession of methamphetamine and cocaine, police said. Those charges were filed before the baby’s death.

The parents were charged Friday with an additional felony count of neglect of a dependent resulting in death, police said.

Michael Zylstra, who was still in custody at the Jasper County Jail in Rensselaer on the previous neglect charges, is now being held on $30,000 bond, police said. Dannae Zylstra, who had previously been released on bond, turned herself over to the sheriff’s office on Friday. She is also being held on $30,000 bond.

Lane closures are scheduled to begin next month on the North Side for resurfacing and sidewalk improvements.

Daily lane closures are scheduled to begin August 15 on Ridge Boulevard from Fargo Avenue to Devon Avenue, according to the Illinois Department of Transportation. The project will resurface the roadway and add new sidewalk ramps that are compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The overall project is expected to be completed this fall, IDOT said.

Drivers should expect delays and allow extra times for trips through the area, IDOT said.

The 28-year-old was walking about 1:10 am. in the 4000 block of South Princeton when he heard shots and felt pain, according to Chicago Police.

Man shot dead on Near North Side in Chicago’s 400th homicide this year

A man was shot to death early Friday near the former Cabrini-Green public housing projects on the Near North Side, according to Chicago Police, marking the city’s 400th homicide so far this year.

Just before 3 a.m., two men were in the 500 block of West Iowa when one, age 31, was shot multiple times in the face and the other, 34, was shot repeatedly in the abdomen, police said. The circumstances of the attack were unknown.

The older man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in critical condition. The younger man died at the scene, police said.

His death, the city’s 400th homicide of 2017, happened early on the 207th day of the year, meaning Chicago has logged nearly two homicides per day, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

Not included in that figure are five people shot dead by on-duty Chicago Police officers during confrontations that are being investigated by the Independent Police Review Authority.

Additionally, the deaths of 10 people this year have been ruled homicides due to wounds that they suffered in years past.

The city continues to outpace its historic 2016 bloodshed, which saw 781 homicides. Last year’s 400th killing didn’t happen until Aug. 1, Sun-Times data shows.

It took barely two months this year for Chicago to hit the 100-homicide mark, and the carnage has risen along with warmer temperatures. The city passed 200 homicides on May 9, and 300 on June 18.

Fifteen people have been slain in the last week alone.

The vast majority of the killings — 371 — have come by way of gunfire, the data shows. Fifteen were stabbed to death, nine were abused or assaulted, two were strangled, two were intentionally hit by vehicles and one was forced to ingest bleach.

The victims have ranged in age from 2 months to 78 years old, with people of color suffering the overwhelming brunt of the violence. Nearly 90 percent of this year’s dead were African-American or Hispanic, according to information from the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Women and girls accounted for just 38 of the victims. Nearly two-thirds were black or Hispanic men between 18 and 40 years old.

Violence has centered in South and West side communities that have been plagued by gunfire for generations. Thirty-nine homicides have happened in the Austin neighborhood — the highest number in the city — and 30 have been slain in Englewood.

In all, more than 2,100 people have been shot in Chicago this year.
