RESENDS AT END OF WEEKEND

Six men were killed and at least 35 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday night and Monday morning.

The most recent deaths were the latest of 364 people fatally shot in the city this year, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times. In all, more than 2,075 people have been shot since the start of the year.

The weekend’s latest fatal shooting happened about 9 p.m. Sunday in the South Side Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to Chicago Police. An 18-year-old man was shot in both legs in the 5400 block of South Damen. He took himself to Holy Cross Hospital, where he later died. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not provided information on the fatality and the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known.

It had been about nine hours since the last fatal shooting in the city.

At 12:13 p.m. Sunday in the South Side Park Manor neighborhood, a 23-year-old man and a 15-year-old boy were in the 7000 block of South Vernon when they were approached by people who opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the back and neck and took himself to St. Bernard Hospital, where he died at 12:34 p.m. The medical examiner’s office has not released his identity. The boy suffered a “minor” gunshot wound to the foot and was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center in good condition.

Hours earlier, one man was killed and three others were wounded in a shooting in the South Side Avalon Park neighborhood, police said. The men — ages 23, 31, 34 and 40 — were shot about 5:15 a.m. Sunday in the 1500 block of East 82nd Street.

The 40-year-old suffered gunshot wounds to the neck and right hand, while the 23-year-old was shot in the face, police said. They both showed up at South Shore Hospital, where they reported being shot at 5:45 a.m. in the 7900 block of South Phillips. They were later transferred to Stroger Hospital, where the 40-year-old died at 8:03 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said. His name has not been released.

The other men gave differing accounts of what happened, but police said the violence was connected. The 31-year-old told investigators he was walking on the sidewalk in the 1500 block of East 82nd Street when someone in a white car opened fire, striking him in the groin and back, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized. The 34-year-old man was shot in the left forearm and taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where his condition was stabilized, police said.

Another man was fatally shot at 2:06 a.m. Sunday in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the West Side. The 35-year-old was sitting in a parked vehicle in the 3600 block of West Chicago when another male walked up and fired shots, authorities said. The victim suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the head and body and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 2:39 a.m. His name has not been released.

At 9:41 p.m. Saturday, 18-year-old Tayvion Roberson was killed and another man was seriously wounded in a Marquette Park neighborhood shooting on the Southwest Side. Roberson was standing on the sidewalk with the 56-year-old man in the 7100 block of South Artesian when another male walked up and opened fire, authorities said. Roberson, who lived in southwest suburban Oak Lawn, was shot in the back and chest and taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:05 p.m. The older man suffered a gunshot wound to the side of his body and was listed in serious condition at Christ Medical Center.

The weekend’s first homicide happened about 10:15 p.m. Friday in the South Side Gresham neighborhood. Officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 8800 block of South Eggleston found 23-year-old Brendon Frazier with gunshot wounds to the buttocks and side of his body, authorities said. Frazier, who lived nearby, was pronounced dead at the scene at 10:35 p.m.

The weekend’s latest nonfatal shooting wounded a man who was riding his bicycle about 12:40 a.m. Monday in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side. The 23-year-old was riding his bike east in the 400 block of West 87th Street when he heard loud noises and realized he had been shot, police said. His condition was stabilized at Christ Medical Center.

A food delivery driver was wounded in the West Garfield Park neighborhood shooting about 8:05 p.m. Sunday. The 40-year-old driver got out of his vehicle in the 4400 block of West Carroll and was approached by a male with a handgun, police said. The driver jumped into his vehicle, but the suspect opened the vehicle’s door and demanded money. The victim tried to speed away, but the suspect opened fire, striking the driver in the leg. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

About 11:50 p.m. Friday, three people were shot and wounded on the Stevenson Expressway near the Dan Ryan Expressway interchange on the South Side. The injured were among five people in a southbound vehicle on the Stevenson, according to the Illinois State Police, which said it wasn’t clear where the shots came from. One person was shot in the abdomen and leg, another in the hand and the third suffered a graze wound to the neck. They were all taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment, according to the police, who said the two other people suffered cuts from shattered glass.

The incident marks the second triple shooting on a Chicago expressway in less than 24 hours.

At least 25 more people were wounded in Chicago shootings between 7 p.m Friday and 5 a.m. Monday.

Last weekend, 10 people were killed, including a 10-year-old boy, and 37 others were wounded in city gun violence.

UPDATES WITH THIRD MAN CHARGED

A third man has been charged in connection with the shooting of a Chicago Police officer and armed robbery of a T-Mobile store Friday afternoon.

Dante Jeffries, 27, faces seven felony charges after he was arrested just after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 600 block of West Hubbard, according to Chicago Police.

Jeffries and two other men, 20-year-old Donzell Grant and 24-year-old Cortez Harrington, were in the group that allegedly shot the officer near 43rd Street and Ashland in a chase that followed the robbery, police said. The injured officer, a woman, was treated for her injuries at Stroger Hospital and released Friday night.

Minutes before the shooting, they had walked into the store about 1:30 p.m., announced a robbery and tied the male employees in the back of the store, according to police. They left with an undetermined amount of merchandise, police said.

Victims pointed officers in the direction the suspects ran, Chicago Police Supt. Eddie Johnson told reporters outside the hospital.

After they got out of their squad car, “one or more offenders” opened fire on the two officers. The female officer — who has been with the department for about 2 1/2 years — was shot in the left leg, Johnson said.

The two officers returned fire, and the wounded officer’s partner chased one of the suspects and took that person into custody in a nearby alley, Johnson said.

A weapon was recovered, “but we’re still trying to make the determination with the ATF whether or not that weapon was involved in the incident,” Johnson said at the time.

Jeffries, who lives on the Near West Side, faces the following felony charges:

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder;
  • Two counts of armed robbery;
  • Aggravated battery;
  • Aggravated discharge of a firearm;
  • Aggravated vehicular hijacking; and
  • Kidnapping while armed with a firearm.

He was scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday.

A judge ordered Grant and Harrington held in lieu of bond Monday. They also face seven felony charges:

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder;
  • Armed robbery;
  • Aggravated battery;
  • Aggravated discharge of a firearm;
  • Armed kidnapping; and
  • Aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm.

UPDATES WITH ADDITIONAL DETAILS

A third man has been charged in connection with the shooting of a Chicago Police officer and armed robbery of a T-Mobile store Friday afternoon.

Dante Jeffries, 27, faces seven felony charges after he was arrested just after 10:30 p.m. on Saturday in the 600 block of West Hubbard, according to Chicago Police.

Jeffries and two other men, 20-year-old Donzell Grant and 24-year-old Cortez Harrington, were in the group that allegedly shot the officer in the left leg near 43rd Street and Ashland in a chase that followed the robbery, police said.

On Monday, Grant and Harrington were ordered held without bond at Cook County Jail, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting. During their bond hearing, Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney Jennifer Bagby said Grant and another suspect entered the business about 1:30 p.m. and marched four employees to the back of the store at gunpoint, bound them with zip-ties and demanded the combination to a store safe.

Harrington, the getaway driver, waited in a nearby alley, behind the wheel of a Dodge Charger, Bagby said.

After the two armed men burst in, a female customer managed to run out and call police. A store employee who was eating lunch also slipped out a back door and called 911, Bagby said. After the gunmen demanded the combination to a store safe, they emptied out a stash of iPhones inside.

As the armed pair headed for the front door with the phones in a sack, they saw two 9th District officers arriving in a marked squad car, Bagby said.

The two men ran out the back, then circled from the alley to the front of the strip mall. As they sprinted across Ashland, the two officers gave chase on foot. Both men turned and pointed their guns at the officers, and police believe the unnamed gunman fired and struck one of the officers in the left knee. The female officer, who has been on the force for two years, fired twice at the fleeing men, and her male partner continued to give chase as they ran south on Marshfield.

The two gunmen reached Harrington’s car and climbed in, then apparently thought better of it, jumping out and sprinting away down a gangway, again stopping to fire at the pursuing officer, Bagby said. The two split up, with the officer still tailing Grant as Grant sprinted down a gangway and climbed a fence, snagging his pants.

Meanwhile, the other gunman ran down an alley and stole a minivan at gunpoint. The officer, unable to scale the fence, ran down another gangway and spotted the van as it pulled forward, then backed into Grant and pinned him against the door of a garage. As the minivan pulled away, the driver fired at the officer, who recognized that gunman behind the wheel, Bagby said. Grant crawled into the garage, where he was arrested by late-arriving officers.

Harrington was arrested later by police, who found his Charger parked in front of a fire hydrant a few blocks away on Marshfield, after a woman who said she’d almost been run over by the car flagged down officers. Harrington approached officers at his car, and admitted the car was his, Bagby said.

Beside the female officer, no one else was injured in the incident, authorities said. She was treated for her injuries at Stroger Hospital and released Friday night.

Jeffries, who lives on the Near West Side, faces the following felony charges:

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder;
  • Two counts of armed robbery;
  • Aggravated battery;
  • Aggravated discharge of a firearm;
  • Aggravated vehicular hijacking; and
  • Kidnapping while armed with a firearm.

He was scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday.

Grant, who lives in the West Englewood neighborhood, and Harrington, of the Park Manor neighborhood, also face seven felony charges:

  • Two counts of attempted first-degree murder;
  • Armed robbery;
  • Aggravated battery;
  • Aggravated discharge of a firearm;
  • Armed kidnapping; and
  • Aggravated vehicular hijacking with a firearm.

UPDATES WITH CORRECTED COUNT FOR SHOOTING HOMICIDES IN 2017

Two people were killed within 10 minutes of each other and six other people were also wounded Monday in shootings across the city.

The year’s shooting death toll rose to 366 after the violence Monday, with more than 2,086 people shot in the city since the start of the year, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times.

The most recent of the two killings happened at 10:20 p.m. in the Park Manor neighborhood on the South Side, according to Chicago Police. A man and a woman were standing in the 7100 block of South Rhodes when a silver Nissan Altima pulled up and three males got out and opened fire. The 20-year-old man was shot in the head, and a woman, who was believed to be between 20 and 30 years old, was shot in both legs.

The man was later pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, police said. The woman was also taken to Christ, where her condition was stabilized.

Just 10 minutes earlier, a man was killed and another was wounded in a Southwest Side Chicago Lawn neighborhood shooting. The men, ages 21 and 26, were driving south at 10:10 p.m. in the 2600 block of West 63rd Street when someone walked up to their vehicle and opened fire, police said. The younger man was shot in the chest and later pronounced dead at Holy Cross Hospital. A bullet grazed the 26-year-old in the chest, and his condition was stabilized at Holy Cross.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office didn’t immediately confirm either of the two deaths.

About an hour later, a man was shot in the head while standing on a porch in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. The 43-year-old was on a porch in front of a home at 11:10 p.m. in the 300 block of North Lorel when three people came out of a gangway and a fight broke out, police said. During the fight, one of the people took out a gun and shot the man on the porch. He was listed in serious condition at Mount Sinai Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head.

The evening’s first shooting happened about 9:40 p.m. when two men were wounded in the South Side Gresham neighborhood. The men, who are both 26 years old, were standing on the sidewalk in the 1600 block of West 78th Street when a tan or gold van pulled up and four males got out and opened fire, police said. The shooters got back into the van and drove west on 78th Street.

One of the men suffered a graze wound to the right leg, and the other man was shot in the left arm and grazed in the right arm, police said. They were both taken to Christ Medical Center, where their conditions were stabilized.

Hours earlier, an 18-year-old man was wounded in a Belmont Cragin neighborhood drive-by shooting on the Northwest Side. The man was walking in the 5600 block of West Palmer at 3:02 p.m. when a blue car pulled up and someone inside fired shots and then drove away, police said. He was shot in the right foot. A friend drove him to Community First Medical Center, where he was in good condition.

The day’s violence followed a weekend in which six people were killed and 35 others were wounded in shootings across the city between Friday evening and Monday morning.

(SYCAMORE) An armed robbery of a 7-Eleven turned into a shooting Monday night in the far western suburbs.

Shortly before 11:30 p.m., two men walked into the 7-Eleven at 404 W. State in Sycamore with a gun, according to Sycamore police.

A struggle with the store clerk ended with the clerk shot twice in the lower body, police said. The clerk, whose age and gender weren’t provided, was taken to Kishwaukee Hospital in DeKalb. Their condition was unknown.

The two men left in a small, white mid-sized vehicle, authorities said. The suspects were described as black men with short hair, believed to be in their 20s. One was wearing a T-shirt that looked like the American flag, and the other was wearing a white shirt.

(BEECHER) A woman and her 1-year-old son were killed in a crash that left her two other sons in critical condition Monday morning near south suburban Beecher.

The crash between a 2002 Chevy S10 pickup and a 2014 Subaru Outback happened at 8:38 a.m. in unincorporated Beecher, according to the Will County sheriff’s office.

The pickup was heading east on Corning Road and failed to stop at the stop sign at Yates Avenue, and struck the Subaru on the driver’s side, causing the SUV to leave the road and go into a field, police said. The Subaru had been heading north on Yates and did not have a stop sign.

The driver of the Subaru, 29-year-old Lindsey Schmidt, and her 1-year-old son Caleb Schmidt, residents of Beecher, were both pronounced dead at the scene at 10:35 a.m., police and the Will County coroner’s office said. Autopsies were scheduled for Tuesday.

The woman’s other two sons, ages 4 and 6, were taken in critical condition  to St. Margaret Hospital in Hammond, Indiana, according to the sheriff’s office.

The driver of the pickup suffered minor injuries and was taken to St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights.

No charges have been filed as the investigation is ongoing. The intersection is expected to reopen Monday afternoon.

“The Will County Sheriff’s Office would like to extend our heartfelt sympathy and continued prayers to the family,” according to the statement.
