8 cases of Legionnaires’ reported at Batavia retirement community

Eight cases of Legionnaires’ disease have been reported since August at a retirement community in west suburban Batavia.

The four latest cases at Covenant Living at the Holmstad, 700 W. Fabyan Parkway in Batavia, were reported to health officials this week, according to a statement from the Kane County Department of Public Health.

“Two cases were reported to us this week, we received word of an early-onset case from mid-August and an additional case reported this past Saturday,” Kane County Health Department Executive Director Barbara Jeffers said in a statement on Monday. “We are working closely with the Illinois Department of Public Health and Covenant Living to monitor this situation.”

The announcement came more than a week after an Aug. 31 statement announcing four initial cases of Legionnaires’ at the facility, health officials said.

Amanda Gosnell, executive director of the facility, said testing by the Illinois Department of Public Health is still pending to determine whether there’s a source of legionella bacteria on the Holmstad campus.

“Because the safety of our residents, guests, and employees is our top priority, we have proactively and aggressively moved forward with several of the measures that could potentially be advised in the event of a positive result,” Gosnell said in the statement. “We continue to collaborate closely with water management experts and state and the Kane County health departments and are following all recommendations; under their advisement, we continue to welcome visitors and maintain regular operations.”

Legionella bacteria are transmitted through water droplets in the air and can cause serious lung infections and death.

Illinois saw 512 reported cases of Legionnaires’ disease statewide in 2018, with 219 confirmed so far this year, the health department said.

Flood barriers to be installed along Lake Michigan

Officials announced a plan to address potential flooding in Chicago from Lake Michigan as it nears record high water levels.

“Hundreds of yards” of jersey barriers will be installed along the lakefront this month to mitigate flooding at eight locations, the Chicago Department of Transportation said in a statement.

Water levels in Lake Michigan are at a “near-record” high due to a longer-term wet pattern, the National Weather Service said. The lake’s water level has increased six feet since January 2013, and 15 inches in the past year.

Barriers will be installed along Lake Shore Drive from Oak Street to North Avenue and at Fullerton Avenue, CDOT said. North Side installation locations will include Juneway Beach, Rogers Beach, Howard Beach and Granville Street. On the South Side, they will be installed from 49th to 50th Street and at 75th Street.

Crews will work to install the barriers during overnight hours starting Tuesday, and the project is expected to be completed by the end of the month, CDOT said. Drivers traveling northbound on Lake Shore Drive may encounter lane closures when crews are working and are advised to use caution.

“Ensuring that the lakefront remains open and accessible to Chicagoans is a top priority for us,” Tom Carney, acting CDOT Commissioner said in the statement. “The lakefront path is a vital means of transportation, and one of the many things that makes Chicago such a unique city. This effort is only one of many projects that will protect our lakefront and residents.”

Man gets 8 years in federal prison for using stolen credit cards to fund luxurious lifestyle

A suburban man has been sentenced to federal prison for using stolen credit card numbers to fund his luxurious lifestyle.

Cameron York, 28, was sentenced to eight and a half years in prison last week after pleading guilty earlier this year to charges of wire fraud, money laundering and aggravated identity theft, the U.S. Attorney’s Office of the Northern District of Illinois said in a statement.

York, of west suburban Stone Park, allegedly used the stolen credit card numbers to make thousands of dollars of fraudulent charges for various items, including a Jaguar XJL and shoes from luxury brands Maison Margiela, Balenciaga and Louis Vuitton, prosecutors said. He did so between 2015 and 2018.

York allegedly spent about $164,598 to purchase at least 8,796 credit card account numbers, social security numbers and other identifying information from online sellers, sometimes using Bitcoin, prosecutors said. He attempted to use at least 4,800 of the credit card numbers to make purchases.

Prosecutors said York often bought items at high-end retailers and then boasted of the purchases on social media. The state’s attorney’s office shared several photos that York posted to Instragram and Facebook.

York also used the stolen information to open accounts at ComEd and Nicor Gas that racked up unpaid utility balances, prosecutors said.
