When sex offender grabs 4-year-old in park, men step up to play hero

(WOODSTOCK) When a convicted sex offender tried to abduct a young boy at a northwest suburban playground Friday afternoon, two adults came to the rescue, battling the man until he freed the boy and police arrived.

Police responded to a fight in progress near the playground at Clay and Bagley streets in Woodstock about 12:43 p.m. Friday, according to Woodstock police. They had to physically separate three men who appeared to be brawling.

Witnesses said one of the men, later identified as 39-year-old Kevin A. Sorensen of Woodstock, “pulled a 4-year-old boy off his bicycle near the Olson Play Park, picked him up and began to run off with him,” police said.

“The boy and his friends began screaming,” alerting adults in the area to the situation.

Two men “physically freed the boy from the man and restrained him” until officers arrived, police said.

Sorensen was arrested without incident and detectives later learned he was a “convicted child sexual offender who was no longer required to register as such,” police said.

“Because of the quick, heroic actions of the good Samaritans, responding officers and detectives, the child was not physically injured,” Police Chief John Lieb said in a statement.

Sorensen was charged with aggravated kidnapping and multiple counts of aggravated battery, all felonies. He was also charged with unlawful restraint and aggravated criminal sexual abuse, police said. He was taken to the McHenry County Jail to await a bond hearing.

Suit: Teenager sexually assaulted woman while on electronic monitoring

ATTORNEY CONTACT: FRANCIS P. MURPHY, (312) 346-3191

A woman is suing Cook County because she was sexually assaulted by a 15-year-old boy while he was on electronic home monitoring last year, claiming the county released the boy to try and save money.

The suit, filed Thursday in Cook County Circuit Court, seeks more than $100,000 in damages from the county and from Sentinel, the company that sold its electronic ankle bracelets and tracking software to the county.

The 34-year-old woman was sexually assaulted and robbed by three boys — ages 12, 15, and 16 — who entered her home about 11 p.m. on Sept. 14, 2016, according to Chicago Police.

All three were later charged with sexual assault and home invasion in connection with the attack, police said. Their identities were not released because of their ages.

The 15-year-old had been released from custody on house arrest while awaiting trial on unspecified felony charges at the time of the attack, according to the suit.

The teen “left his home while wearing his electronic ankle monitoring bracelet for more than four hours” before her assault and robbery, the suit says.

A spokeswoman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office said they do not comment on pending litigation. A representative for Sentinel also declined to comment.

Nearly two months after the woman’s assault, the Cook County sheriff’s office announced that the population of its jail at 2700 S. California had dropped below 8,000 inmates for the first time in years. It pointed to more inmates being released on electronic monitoring. In a statement, Sheriff Tom Dart said the move helped reduce jail costs and save the county money.

However, the 15-year-old accused in the assault would not have been held at Cook County Jail, but would have been in the care of the Juvenile Temporary Detention Center if he wasn’t released.

The suit accuses the county of willful and wanton disregard of public safety and says the county “allowed any percentage of confined bailees to be away from their confined area knowing that some will commit felonies because it allowed for financial savings.”

It also claims the county allowed employees to act as electronic ankle bracelet monitors knowing they were not trained to interpret the data they received from the bracelets. County employees were also “overwhelmed with data received from the hardware” and “were not properly tracking defendants on bail required to wear an electronic ankle bracelet,” the suit says.

The suit accuses Sentinel of negligence for failing to properly train county employees on how to interpret data from the electronic ankle bracelets so that they would know when users had left their homes in violation of their bail.

A 40-year-old man was killed in a crash Friday afternoon in northwest suburban Des Plaines.

First responders were called at 4:15 p.m. to a report of a motorcycle crash in the 2300 block of South Mount Prospect Road, according to Des Plaines police.

Officers found the man lying near the curb with injuries to his head and face, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released his identity.

A witness told investigators that he was driving north behind the motorcyclist when he saw dust blown into the air and then saw the motorcycle lying on the ground and its driver lying in the roadway.

An investigation into the crash was ongoing Friday night.

UPDATES WITH MUGSHOT

(OAK LAWN) Anonymous tips helped police identify a suspect in the armed robbery of a Subway sandwich shop in the southwest suburbs, and later, another anonymous call helped lead to his arrest.

The Subway at 9610 S. Cicero in Oak Lawn was robbed on Dec. 20, 2016, by a man who showed a handgun and demanded money from the clerk, according to Oak Lawn police.

The suspect, described as a male black in his 50s who walked with a limp, got away, but was captured in a surveillance photo which was distributed to the public through social media and other mean, police said.

Detectives initially received “numerous tips that came in as a result of the alert and positively identified the offender,” police said,

But Everett Sanders, 53, of the West Englewood neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side, escaped arrest, likely by fleeing the state, police said. Though a warrant was issued for his arrest, efforts to find him were unsuccessful.

But on Wednesday, investigators received “an anonymous call that Sanders had returned to the area,” police said.

He was found at a home in the 5000 block of South Racine Avenue in Chicago, and was taken into custody without incident, police said.

He was charged with one count of armed robbery and ordered held at the Cook County Jail on a $500,000 bond during a hearing Friday in Bridgeview.

(RIVERSIDE) A man was charged with breaking into a garage and burglarizing a vehicle early Thursday in west suburban Riverside.

Officers were dispatched at 2:13 a.m. to a burglar alarm in the 300 block of Shenstone Road, according to Riverside police. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the alarm was coming from a garage, at which point one of the officers saw a Hispanic male wearing all black riding a bicycle “at a high rate of speed” from the garage.

After his first attempt to stop the suspect proved unsuccessful, the officer tried to cut the bicyclist off with his squad car, police said. The suspect then jumped off his bicycle and ran. Following a short foot chase, officers caught him in the 400 block of Shenstone Road.

During the chase, officers continued to receive 911 calls stating that someone was running in backyards close to where the burglary happened, police said. Officers later determined the calls were about the male suspect they had apprehended.

Officers then showed up at the scene of the burglary, where the victim positively identified the burglar, police said. The suspect told police that his name was Christian, but refused to offer his last name. During an investigation, it was learned that the 2005 Volvo parked inside the garage that had been burglarized also sustained damage.

In addition, the Trek 800 bike that the burglar was riding didn’t belong to him, police said. Officers believe the bike was stolen, but were unable to identify a victim. Officers also found the suspect with an iPhone, black Prada sunglasses, two sets of keys that weren’t his and other electronic devices and credit cards stolen from the vehicle in the 300 block of Shenstone. They also recovered $38 in cash and change that was taken from the vehicle.

The suspect was taken to the Riverside Police Department for further investigation and booking, police said. While in custody, he refused to cooperate with police “in every manner,” including refusing to give his name or any other identification. A fingerprint check later revealed his identity.

Christian A. Benavides-Acevedo, 18, of Melrose Park, was charged with a felony count of burglary and misdemeanor counts of criminal trespass to vehicle and criminal damage to vehicle, police said. Benevides-Acevedo had already been arrested 14 times for a variety of offenses, including burglary, theft, robbery, unlawful use of weapon, battery, aggravated battery and drugs.

(GENEVA) No one was injured in a fire Thursday evening in west suburban Geneva that left a detached garage damaged.

Firefighters responded at 6:16 p.m. to a report of a garage fire in an alley in the 1000 block of Geneva Drive, according to the Geneva Fire Department.

When they arrived, firefighters found the two-car garage fully engulfed in flames and the siding of an adjacent garage melting, the fire department said. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines and kept the fire from spreading to other structures.

No houses caught fire and no injuries were reported, the fire department said.

There were no cars parked in the garage at the time of the fire, the fire department said. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
