A Southwest Side man has been charged with driving away after hitting a 3-year-old boy with his car while the toddler was trick-or-treating on Halloween in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood, leaving him seriously injured.

Cody J. Sanders, 25, faces felony counts of failure to report an accident and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, according to Chicago Police.

About 6:15 p.m. Monday, the toddler was with his family crossing the street in the 6500 block of West 63rd Street when he was struck. They were in a crosswalk, police said.

The car kept going west on 63rd from Natchez, then turned onto Harlem, police said.

The boy, identified by family as Patrick Zbylut, had been trick-or-treating. He suffered brain trauma and was taken to in serious condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, according to an online campaign started Monday night to help cover his medical costs.

Sanders, of the 6200 block of South Mulligan, also faces misdemeanor charges of failure to give information after a crash and failure to yield to a pedestrian. He is due in bond court Friday.
