UPDATE: Police: 5 killed, 31 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

UPDATES WITH ADDITIONAL SHOOTINGS

Five people were killed and at least 31 more have been wounded in shootings across the city since Friday evening, according to Chicago Police.

The weekend’s latest homicide happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. Officers responding to a call of a person shot in the 2400 block of West Lexington found a 23-year-old man lying on the ground with gunshot wounds to the back. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 3:45 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. His name was not released Sunday.

About an hour earlier, a 22-year-old man was shot to death in a separate Lawndale attack. Officers saw shots fired about 2:10 a.m. in the 1500 block of South Christiana, where a Isaiah Hurley was hit in the chest and pronounced dead at 2:25 a.m., police and the medical examiner’s office said. Officers spotted several people leaving the scene and arrested them nearby, with charges pending early Sunday.

At 1:50 a.m., a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side. He walked out the backdoor of his apartment in the 7300 block of North Sheridan and then returned and told his friends that he’d been shot, police said. He was shot in the back and taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he died at 3:30 a.m., authorities said. His name was not released Sunday.

Saturday morning, a man was gunned down in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. Giovanni Galvan, 20, was standing on the sidewalk about 10:15 a.m. in the 3100 block of West 24th Street when a vehicle pulled up and someone inside shot him in the chest, abdomen, back and arm, authorities said. Galvan was taken to Mount Sinai, where he died at 10:41 a.m. He lived in the 2200 block of South Trumbull Avenue.

The weekend’s first fatal shooting happened about 1:40 a.m. Saturday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. Officers found a 37-year-old man lying in an alley in the 4200 block of West Wilcox with multiple gunshot wounds to the head, authorities said. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 2:02 a.m. His name has not been released.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened at 7:45 p.m. Sunday night when a 16-year-old boy was shot in the Gresham neighborhood, police said. He was outside in the 1500 block of West 81st Street when two males approached and shot him twice in the buttocks. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where his condition was stabilized.

Forty minutes before, a 23-year-old man was critically wounded in Hermosa. Officers were investigating a report of shots fired at 7:05 p.m. when they found the man unresponsive in the 1900 block of North Karlov, police said. He was shot in the face, chest, back and right hand and taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.

Just before that, another 23-year-old was critically wounding in a shooting in the Wrightwood neighborhood on the Southwest Side. At 6:52 p.m., he was outside in the 8000 block of South Sacramento when a light grey SUV pulled up and someone inside fired shots, police said. He was taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the head and back.

At least 28 more people have been wounded in other shootings across the city since 5:50 p.m. Friday.

Additionally, a Chicago Police officer shot a person who authorities say pulled a gun after running from a traffic stop Sunday morning in Englewood.
