UPDATES WITH CHARGES UPGRADED
(ELGIN) Charges have been upgraded against a convicted felon caught with a loaded handgun earlier this month in northwest suburban Elgin.
Johnathon King, 26, of the 900 block of Balustrol Drive, was initially charged with one felony count of unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, according to a statement from Elgin police.
About 10:30 p.m. Sept. 2, officers stopped King’s vehicle near East Chicago Street and Willard Avenue, police said. As they searched his vehicle, they found a loaded handgun and additional ammunition.
Investigators later learned the gun had been stolen from Carpentersville, police said at the time.
On Wednesday, the Cook County state’s attorney’s office convened a grand jury that issued additional charges against King, including being an armed habitual criminal, a Class x felony; and possession of a firearm without an FOID card, a Class 3 felony, police said.
