UPDATES WITH ADDITIONAL SHOOTING
Two men were killed and at least 16 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between late Friday and Sunday afternoon, marking a deadly start to the city’s Labor Day weekend.
The two deaths were the latest casualties of Chicago’s gun violence that has taken the lives of at least 433 people since the start of the year, according to data maintained by the Chicago Sun-Times.
The latest killing happened at 5:02 a.m. Saturday when a man was found shot to death in the West Side Austin neighborhood, according to Chicago Police. He was found lying on the ground with a gunshot wound to the head in the 1000 block of North Waller. The man, whose age was unknown, was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office has not released his name, pending notification of his family.
About four hours earlier, a man was shot to death and three other people were wounded in a Gresham neighborhood attack on the South Side. James McChristian, 26, was with another man and two women, sitting on the front porch of a house about 1:20 a.m. in the 8300 block of South Hermitage when three people got out of a white car parked behind the house, walked up to them and opened fire, police and the medical examiner’s office said.
McChristian, who lived nearby, was shot in the chest and abdomen and was pronounced dead at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn less than an hour later, authorities said. The other man, 23, was shot in the shoulder and was listed in good condition at Christ Medical Center. A 25-year-old woman was also taken to Christ and stabilized with gunshot wounds to the arm and abdomen. Another woman, 23, was shot in the leg and was listed in good condition at Christ.
The weekend’s latest nonfatal shooting happened Sunday afternoon in the West Side Austin neighborhood. At 1:52 p.m., a 26-year-old man was walking out of a store in the 4800 block of West Superior when a dark car pulled up and someone inside started shooting, police said. The man, who is affiliated with a gang, was shot in the leg and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized. An 18-year-old woman was walking nearby during the shooting and suffered a graze wound to the abdomen, police said. She was taken in good condition to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park. Police said the woman was not an intended target of the shooting, and she and the man do not know each other.
At least 11 other people have been wounded in shootings across the city between 11 p.m. Friday and 3 p.m. Sunday.
Seven people were killed and at least 25 others were wounded in shootings last weekend.
