A man has been charged with robbing and shooting a 71-year-old man while he was watering his lawn earlier this month in the Marquette Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side.
Antoine J. Davis, 30, is charged with one felony count each of armed robbery and aggravated battery with a firearm, according to a statement from Chicago Police.
The victim was watering his lawn about 12:10 p.m. Sept. 6 in the 7000 block of South California when Davis rode up on a bicycle, police said. Davis stole the man’s wallet and shot him in the abdomen during the robbery before riding away on a bike.
In surveillance video captured from a neighbor’s front porch, two males can be seen as they ride by the man as he waters his lawn. A short time later, one of the males returns and gets off his bike as he approaches the 71-year-old. The second bicyclist lingers back and moves out of the video’s frame.
The video shows the bicyclist approach the man from behind. As he does, the 71-year-old turns around and the two begin to struggle as the bicyclist is sprayed with the hose. As the two struggle, the 71-year-old is pushed to the ground. The other bicyclist rides away down the street while his partner goes into the man’s pockets.
The 71-year-old managed to get to his feet after the bicyclist who robbed him rode away. He walked to his house, and then to a neighbor’s home, where he waited on the steps and clutches his waist.
He was eventually taken to Holy Cross Hospital and was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was in fair condition, police said.
Investigators eventually identified Davis as the shooter and arrested him at 4:15 p.m. Friday outside his home in the 6800 block of South Washtenaw, police said. He was expected to appear in bond court Saturday.
