(ELGIN) A 17-year-old boy is facing weapons charges after police say they found a loaded handgun in his backpack Tuesday evening in northwest suburban Elgin.

Officers saw the boy about 5 p.m. near the 400 block of Villa Street and, suspecting him of having a gun, walked over to him, according to a statement from Elgin police. The boy ran away, but was quickly chased down and arrested.

While searching him, officers found a loaded handgun in his backpack, police said.

He was charged with two felony counts of aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and one misdemeanor count of not possessing a valid FOID card. He was later transferred to the Kane County Juvenile Justice Center.
