UPDATES WITH ADDITIONAL SHOOTINGS
One man has been killed and at least 18 other people have been wounded in shootings since Friday night on Chicago’s South and West sides.
The city’s only fatal shooting happened Saturday afternoon in the West Side Austin neighborhood. Officers responded at 12:23 p.m. to a call of a person lying face down in a vacant lot in the 5400 block of West Ohio. Antoine D. Watkins, 22, was dead at the scene, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived about a block away. An autopsy Sunday found Watkins died of multiple gunshot wounds and his death was ruled a homicide, but it was not known when the shooting happened.
The most recent nonfatal shooting happened Sunday night in the Gage Park neighborhood on the Southwest Side, police said. About 7:50 p.m., a 17-year-old boy was in the 5200 block of South Kedzie when someone inside a vehicle fired shots at him. He was struck in his back and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
A little over an hour earlier, a 33-year-old man was shot in the Washington Park neighborhood on the South Side. He was walking about 6:25 p.m. in the 5300 block of South Wabash when someone approached him and “a scuffle ensued,” police said. During the scuffle, the offender pulled out a gun and fired shots. The man was shot in one of his legs and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
At 4:30 p.m., a 19-year-old man was shot in his neck in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, police said. He was getting out of a vehicle in the 4300 block of West Wilcox when someone walked up to him and fired shots. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition.
At least 15 other people have been shot in Chicago since 9:53 p.m. Friday night.
Last weekend, four men were killed and 10 other people were wounded in shootings across the city. More than 500 people have been shot in Chicago so far in 2017.
