UPDATES WITH ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Two males were wounded Thursday night in a South Side shooting involving the Illinois State Police.
The two were wounded after state troopers learned they were accused of robbing a taxicab driver, a source said.
State troopers were conducting a traffic stop about 8:30 p.m. near West 77th Street and South Vincennes Avenue when a cab pulled up, and the driver flagged the troopers, according to a statement from Illinois State Police.
“The Troopers encountered an armed subject in the backseat of the taxi cab and shots were fired,” the statement said. “Two suspects in the cab were struck by gunfire.”
One male suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken in serious-to-critical condition to Stroger Hospital, according to Chicago Fire Department spokesman Larry Langford. Another male suffered a graze wound to the foot and was taken in good condition to St. Bernard Hospital. The ages of the two were not immediately available.
One of the troopers was taken in good condition to Northwestern Memorial Hospital. The officer was not shot, but additional information was not immediately available, Langford said.
The state police reported no troopers were injured in the incident.
A gun was recovered from the taxi, police said.
This is the second Illinois State Police-involved shooting in less than a week. On Saturday, a 15-year-old boy was shot by a state trooper after he tried to run over a trooper with a stolen car, police said at the time.
