Five people were killed and at least 30 others have been wounded in shootings across the city over the New Year’s holiday weekend, according to Chicago Police.

The most recent homicide happened Sunday morning in the West Garfield Park neighborhood. At 5:53 a.m., officers responded to a call of a person down in the 4600 block of West Monroe and found a 39-year-old man lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Less than two hours earlier, two people were fatally shot in Uptown. The shooting happened at 4:25 a.m. in the 4600 block of North Broadway, police said. A 38-year-old man was shot in the chest and right leg and a man, between the ages of 35 and 40, was shot multiple times in the right side, police said. They were both taken to Illinois Masonic Hospital where they were pronounced dead.

Another person was fatally shot Saturday afternoon in the West Side Austin neighborhood. A 24-year-old man was driving in the 4800 block of West Chicago at 12:29 p.m. when a Mercedes sideswiped his vehicle, police said. Someone got out of the Mercedes, began arguing with the man and shot him in his left side during the argument. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The first homicide of the weekend happened about 9:40 p.m. Friday in the South Side Gresham neighborhood, where officers responding to a call of shots fired in the 8100 block of South Bishop found a 15-year-old boy in an alley with gunshot wounds to the head, police said. He was dead at the scene. Police said the shooting may have been gang-related.

The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Sunday in the Morgan Park neighborhood on the Far South Side. Officers responded to a call of a person shot at 3:46 a.m. in the 11200 block of South Longwood and found a 19-year-old man wounded, police said. Additional officers discovered a vehicle near Monterey and Vincennes with a 21-year-old man and 20-year-old man who were wounded in the same shooting. The 19-year-old man was shot in the lower back and the 20-year-old was shot in the left shoulder, police said. Both men were taken to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where their conditions were stabilized. The 21-year-old was shot in the throat and also taken to Christ, where he was listed in critical condition.

At least 27 other people were wounded in shootings between 4:30 p.m. Friday and  Sunday.

Forty-two people were shot in Chicago over the New Year’s holiday last year, leaving four dead.
