Police: 1 dead, 5 wounded in Chicago weekend shootings

A man was killed and at least five other people were wounded in shootings on Chicago’s South and West sides since Friday evening, according to Chicago Police.

The fatal shooting happened Friday night in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. Just after 10 p.m., the 34-year-old man was shot in the chest by someone he knew during a fight inside a home in the 8000 block of South Evans, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office could not immediately provide information on the death.

Area South detectives were questioning a person in custody early Saturday, police said.

Most recently, a man was shot and seriously wounded Saturday morning in the Princeton Park neighborhood on the South Side. The 28-year-old was shot in the upper right thigh at 6:21 a.m. in the 9100 block of South Wentworth, according to police. Acquaintances drove him to Little Company of Mary Hospital in Evergreen Park, and he was being transferred to Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn in serious condition.

Nearly three hours earlier, a man was shot during a robbery attempt in the South Side Washington Park neighborhood. About 3:30 a.m., the 32-year-old was walking in the 5900 block of South Calumet when two people walked up and demanded his things, with one of them brandishing a handgun, police said. He swatted at the gun, which went off and hit his right foot. The robbers ran away empty-handed. The man was listed in good condition at the University of Chicago Medical Center.

A 16-year-old boy was shot Friday night in the West Englewood neighborhood on the South Side. He was standing on the sidewalk about 9:50 p.m. in the 6900 block of South Hermitage when he heard gunfire and felt pain, according to police. A family member drove him to Holy Cross Hospital with a gunshot wound to his back. He was later transferred to Mount Sinai Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

Earlier Friday evening, a man was shot in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side. A 20-year-old man was standing in the street at 5:26 p.m. in the 1600 block of North Cicero when a vehicle pulled up and someone fired shots, police said. He suffered gunshot wounds to the shoulder and hip and was taken to Illinois Masonic Medical Center in critical condition.

The weekend’s first shooting happened in the Lawndale neighborhood on the West Side. A 50-year-old man was walking at 5:32 p.m. in the 1100 block of South Francisco when someone in a white vehicle fired shots, according to police. He was shot in the arm and taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in good condition.
