UPDATES WITH ID OF CHARGED DRIVER

(FOREST PARK) A Chicago woman was drunk when she caused an Eisenhower Expressway crash that left a 10-month-old boy in her car on life support early Sunday, Illinois State Police allege.

Shante Nelson, 38, was charged with aggravated DUI causing great bodily harm for being at the wheel of a Hyundai Elantra that was stopped in the right lane of eastbound Interstate 290 near Desplaines Avenue in Forest Park about 3:20 a.m. That’s when a minivan slammed into the back of the car, according to state police.

The baby was in the Hyundai without a proper safety seat, police said. He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, where he remained in critical condition Monday night. Police initially said the baby was a girl.

The 50-year-old man driving the minivan was taken to the same hospital, along with Nelson. Their conditions were not released.

Court information for Nelson, a Chicago resident, wasn’t immediately available.
